December 8, 1995 was the fifteenth anniversary of John Lennon’s death. It is appropriate, therefore, that we pause and reflect on what this man’s music represents today. In his song, Imagine, John envisioned a better world, “a world with no possessions and no hunger.” “Imagine,” he challenged, “a world with no countries or religions,” and, “nothing to kill or die for.” “Imagine,” he dreamed out loud, “a brotherhood of man.” What noble, brave, and revolutionary words! They ring through the years as true and inspiring today as when they were first sung.
What is necessary to realize John’s “brotherhood of man?” We only need to open our hearts, our minds, our spirits, our ears, and our eyes. Let each of us open our heart to the suffering and needs of our brothers, sisters, and animal friends. Let their burdens be lightened by our compassion, our service, and our love. May our minds be open to comprehend the unique role humans play as stewards of our own lives, and all life. Collectively, humanity is blessed with great intelligence and the capacity to transform the world. Let us choose to create only good. Let our spirits be open to visualize one world, whole, healthy, and at peace. It is within the power of each person, and the human family cooperatively, to achieve a heavenly paradise on Earth. We need only commit to walking hand in hand in perfect harmony for this miracle to begin.
May our ears be open to hear that sweet, pure voice of conscience which whispers truth. When our brothers, sisters, and planet speak, let us listen with empathy and caring. Hear the voice of the Creator in the laughter of a child and the song of a mockingbird. Finally, may our eyes be open to see beyond this life into eternity. May we see infinity in the exquisite, jewel-like perfection of our blue-white globe nestled in the black velvet of the cosmos. We are all voyagers on Spaceship Earth. This is our home. We can all be one family, One People, if we live John’s dream and just… “Imagine.”
